Over 35's Ramp Up Competition at the Australian Skin Cancer Clinics NSW Longobard State Titles

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 June, 2012 : - - Defending over 35’s champion Craig Munro (Port Macquarie) and Lennox Head surfer Ben Dickens opened the day in clean 4 foot waves at Town Beach. Going wave for wave, the pair demonstrated the talent in the over 35’s with only 0.1 of a point between them.

“It started off good and ended up really nice, I did a good first turn and got a big second one and finished it off with a nice floater”, said Munro who is competing in his first contest all year.

Having a year off competing after winning the over 35’s in 2011, Munro is also competing in the open mens division which gets underway tomorrow. Like many competitors, Munro looks forward to the friendly atmosphere the NSW Longboard Titles has always been known for.

“It’s a perfect day out here and we have really nice conditions, everyone is so friendly and it's a pleasure to be in this competition. This is the only event I compete in, after hurting my knee in the finals last year on the first wave I decided to have some time off”, said Munro.

“Town Beach is always so consistent, it’s great to have the competition in my backyard. You have Town Beach, the breakwall, bomby, chickens and out the back you have Flagstaffs –there is always a wave here, it’s really diverse”, said Munro of the location at Port Macquarie.

Munro has made it into the finals the last three years in a row and will be surfing against fellow local Ian Bell in the open mens tomorrow who is NSW champion in the Opens mens 8 foot division. Dee Why surfer Sean Dry and local Grant McKenzie (Bonny Hills), move straight to round 2 with Munro and Dickens in the over 35’s. Dry is also competing in the over 40’s division and surfed his way to the final along with Richard Smith who is another multiple division entrant.

Smith has won three out of the four heats he has competed in so far and is in the final for the over 45’s and over 40’s mens division. The VB Slab of the day fittingly goes to Smith, the Sawtell surfer has been on fire all week. The Australian Skin Cancer Clinics NSW Longboard State Titles will move into day four tomorrow where semi finals for the over 50, over 55 and over 60’s will take place. Open men and women will take to the waves for the first time for the event and competitors will enjoy a function at the Town green Inn tomorrow night after a long day.

Australian Skin Cancer Clinics are giving out FREE Skin Cancer Check Vouchers to all Surfing NSW Members at the State Longboard Titles and Janine was on hand to answer any questions competitors had in regards to regular skin checks. Schedule is subject to change so please check or call the event hotline on 0458 247 212.

The annual event will see competitors travel form all corners of the state to enjoy a week long competition and well over due catch up with friends. The Town Green Inn is the official competitors venue and will host a function on Thursday night for all competitors and their families.

The event will be fully mobile in the Port Macquarie area with Town Beach, Rainbow Beach, Grants beach, Flyns Beach, Light House and North Haven Beach all venue options. The daily Running Schedule and Contest location will be confirmed on the Event Hotline (0458 247 212) after 7:00am each day of the event.
