Hughie Vaughan shines in the Under 10 Boys division

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 December, 2015 - The Wahu Surfer Groms Comp at Cronulla saw seven new champions crowned after a series of hotly contested battles in playful two-foot righthanders.

Jamie Thomson held off an blisteringly in-form Joel Vaughan to claim the Under-14 Boys final. Despite Vaughan posting a perfect ten-point ride, Thomson was able to maintain the upper hand thanks to two-wave total of 15.6 (out of a possible 20 points). When the final hooter sounded Thomson got the win by a 1.20 margin.

Cedar Leigh-Jones (Avalon) successfully capped off her 2015/2016 Wahu campaign claiming the Under-14 Girls final. The Northern Beaches surfer posted a 17.75 heat total which left her fellow competitors chasing two-wave combinations to usurp her lead.

Kobi Clements (Collaroy) dominated the field in the Under-12 Boys smashing out a barrage of mammoth manoeuvres. As a result, the Northern Beaches surfer posted a giant heat total of 18.1 to take the win ahead of Taj Simon (Port Kembla), Koda Killorn (Maroubra) and Jarvis Earle (Cronulla) who finished second, third and fourth respectively.

Gabi Spake (Collaroy) fought tooth-and-nail in the Under-12 Girls final to clutch the victory. Despite runner-up Oceanna Rogers (Shell Cove) posting a perfect ten-point wave score, Spake was able to take the win thanks to some impressive turns and a two-wave total of 13.6.

Hughie Vaughan (Bateau Bay) put the icing on the cake in the Under-10 Boys, posting a near perfect 9.5 scoring wave. The Central Coast natural-footer claimed three of the four NSW Wahu Surfer Grom Comp events, previously winning events in Coffs Harbour and on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Hughie is brother of Under-14 runner-up Joel Vaughan.

Zahlia Short (Austinmer) posted a heat total of 13.23 to claim the Under-10 Girls final. The Illawarra surfer performed a series of impressive turns to get the win ahead of fellow Illawarra surfer Tyla Hurst (Port Kembla).

Local surfer Kash Brown (Cronulla) made his mark on the Under-8 Mixed division leaving his fellow opponents chasing two wave combinations to take the win. Brown posted a near-perfect 9.17 ride in the final and was able to back it up with 8.5, which gave him an cumulative heat total of 17.67.

The main base for event six of the Wahu Surfer Groms Comp series is North Cronulla with backup locations of Wanda and Elouera.

The Cronulla Wahu Surfer Groms Comp was the final Wahu Surfer Groms Comp in NSW for 2015/2016.

The series is one of the major stepping stones in the development of young Australian surfers. The 10-event program will cater for micro groms from Under 8 through to Under 14 with events in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania.

The Under 8 will be a mixed division with parent assists, while competition will be held in both boys and girls in the Under 10 (optional parent assist), Under 12 and Under 14 divisions.

As an added bonus, the respective winners of the Under 14 boys’ and girls’ divisions from each event will receive an invite to attend an all-expenses paid, three-day Wahu Surf Camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre.

Each entrant will also receive a Wahu Surfer Groms Comps t-shirt for entering, plus a Wahu beach product and there will be plenty of beach games and giveaways at each event.
