SUP festival hosts a variety of divisions for competition

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 29 August, 2014 - Day one of the three day 2014 Immerse SUP & Paddle Festival began at Bilinga Beach on the Gold Coast today with Queensland’s best SUP and Prone Paddlers taking to the waves for Technical Sprint Racing Divisions.

Currumbin local, Jake Jensen provided an upset in the Open Men’s SUP by taking out reigning Queensland Champion Lincoln Dews (Buderim, QLD). Jensen and Dews were neck in neck throughout the bout, however on the final lap, Dews made a critical course error that saw Jensen take the win.

“I’ve been in Hawaii and watching the waves the Gold Coast all this week and I’ve been pretty excited to get back for this race. Luckily the swell has dropped off enough for a great race here at North Kirra,” said an elated Jensen.

SUP Mother of two, Karla Gilbert (Palm Beach, QLD) proved she’s not one to be messed with taking out the Open Women’s SUP Division and also coming home in 4th place in the overall race.

“Coming fourth overall isn’t something I set out to do, but I enjoy training along side the boys and pushing myself with them so I’m pretty happy with this result,” said Gilbert.

Gilbert took out both Technical and Marathon Open Women’s divisions last year and will be looking for a clean sweep again at the Marathon race on Sunday.

A TV Feed will be available from 8am tomorrow morning. Tomorrow will see the State’s best surfers hit the water as they battle for a chance to represent Queensland at the forthcoming Australian SUP and Paddle Titles.

The 2014 Immerse SUP & Paddle Festival will be held August 29, 30 and 31 and will cater for SUP, Prone and Ski paddling divisions in Technical Sprint Racing, Marathon and also SUP Surfing. The Marathon will also cater for social paddlers with a shorter 8km from Rainbow Bay to Currumbin Creek and is open to men, women, girls and boys of any age.

The three-day Immerse SUP & Paddle Festival will provide the exclusive qualification pathway for Queensland athletes aiming to compete at the 2014 Australian SUP Titles, which will also take place on the Gold Coast later this year, and subsequently the 2015 International Surfing Association (ISA) Paddleboard and SUP World Championships.

The Pathway:

1. 2014 Surfing Queensland Immerse SUP & Paddle Festival

2. 2014 Australian SUP Titles

3. 2015 International Surfing Association Paddleboard & SUP World Championships
