12/U and 14/U boys divisions hit the water

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 30 June, 2014 - Gold Coast Coast, Queensland - Day three of the Billabong Occy’s Grom Comp, Presented by Breaka saw the 12 and under boys and 14 and under boys hit the water in playful 2ft offshore conditions for yet another day of exciting competition. It was the 12 and under boys round 2 that opened competition for the third day of the event which saw Beau Buckpitt (Culburra Beach, NSW) fend off an in form Jay Occhilupo (Coolangatta, QLD) with a first place finish.

With an unfortunate 4th place finish in his round two heat, Jay’s 2014 Billabong Grom Comp campaign has now been closed. In addition to the 12 and under boys division, it was International phenomenon Kian Martin (Canggu, Bali) who throughout competition has evidently displayed his dynamic surfing ability in the various conditions. The young 12 year old not only finished first in his round 2 heat but also carried his momentum through to the Quarterfinals again finishing in first place.

“It’s my second time competing in the Billabong Occy’s Grom comp,” says Martin. “Dbah is one of my favourite waves to surf in Australia and I’m spending as much time in the water as I can leading up to the rest of Occy’s and the next event at Lennox Heads. I’m really stoked that I beat my results from last year where I finished third in the quarterfinals so it’s already been a big success,” Martin continued.

The 14 and under boys run through the second half of the day with Caleb Tancred (Avoca Beach, NSW), Kyuss King (Byron Bay, NSW) Dakoda Walters (Angourie, NSW), Luke Glover (Caloundra, QLD) and Tully Wylie (Jan Juc, VIC) flaunting an array of progressive manoeuvres proving to be prominent   standouts within the competition. In particular, it was the closely fought contention between Kyuss King (Byron Bay, NSW) and Dakoda Walters (Angourie, NSW) that caught the eyes of spectators with the two exchanging positions between first and second place in both rounds two and three thus pushing them through to the first semi-final.

However, it was Angouries’s Dakoda Walters who posted the highest heat total of the event scoring a two wave combination of 17.24 (out of a possible 20). Running in conjunction with the 16 and under boys final will be the Kustom Mini Strike which will see stakes within the blue ribbon final skyrocket as competitors turn to major aerial manoeuvres for their chance at cracking the $1000 winner takes all prize purse.

The 2014 Billabong Occy’s Grom Comp, presented by Breaka will be based at Duranbah on Queensland’s Gold Coast from Saturday 28th June to Thursday 3rd July. The Billabong Occy's Grom Comp, presented by Breaka is proudly supported by SeaFm, Southern Cross Ten, Surfing Life Magazine, Kustom, Kirra Surf, JS Surfboards, Fast Proof Press, Vonzipper, SupaGlu and Surfing Queensland.
