Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 23 April, 2014 - Keramas-Bali - After posting a perfect 10 score during yesterday’s semifinal, Dede Suryana (West Java) continued his outstanding performance by winning the Bali-Japan Friendship final held today at Keramas on the final day of the Garuda Indonesia Travel Scene Pro.

Suryana was up against fellow Indonesian Garut Widiarta (Kuta) and two of the JPSA’s top ranked surfers, Kato Arashi and Tanaka Hideyoshi, in the 30 minute final held in consistent 2-3 foot conditions.

Suryana got off to a great start with an excellent wave score of 8.75 (out of a possible 10) with his first wave, and although he lost the lead for awhile to Arashi and then was threatened near the end by Hideyoshi,  Suryana re-took back into the lead with a 5.35 wave score towards the end of the final and then clinched his win with a 7.30 score on his last wave to finish with a total two wave score of 16.05 points (out of a possible 20).

Hideyoshi mounted a last minute charge with his final wave posting his highest score of 7.85, but as his next highest score was only a 4.80, he had to settle for second spot with a two wave total score of 12.65.  Arashi was third with a combined score of 12.00, and Widiarta fourth with 11.05 points.

“I’m so stoked I made first today!” said Suryana.  “I came here early this morning and though I had a sore throat and didn’t really feel that fit, I rested and drank lots of water while I watched the other guys surf their final, studying the lineup.  I saw that the wave was moving around, some wide, some inside, and those guys were surfing really good, so I knew it wouldn’t be easy.  But I stuck to my game plan, same as yesterday, to start out with a good wave and get a big score, and it worked out for me,” he explained.

Later from the podium he added, “Thanks so much to everyone, to the JPSA, to the Bali Surfing Association, to the judges, to my sponsors Quiksilver, Camden, Bali Samudra Biru, +62, Luke Studer, and to my wife and my family back home as well as Garuda and the other event sponsors.  Thank you all!”

ASC Head Judge Wayan Pica, also a member of the Bali Surfing Association (who helped the JPSA organize the event), liked what he saw during the Bali-Japan Friendship match, saying, “Year on year the Japanese surfers have been very consistent and perform at a high level during these Bali events, where in the past the Bali boys haven’t been able to put together their skill with smart contest surfing.

"But this year I was impressed and see quite a difference, that the Bali boys have really closed the gap as Dede and Garut demonstrated yesterday and today.  It was great to watch and I’m proud of them.”

Suryana takes home not only a nice trophy and Rp 5 million ($450) cash for his win, he also nabbed an extra $500 USD bonus for getting the highest score in his division for yesterday's 10 point wave.  $1,000 USD for a few heats of surfing over a couple of days…not bad, eh?

“I’ve got a baby on the way,” said Suryana when asked what he’ll be spending his cash on.  “So it’s all going into the family wallet!”
