Young Brazilians in top form at Rip Curl Pro Junior Mar del Plata
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 31 March, 2015 - Playa Biologia, Argentina - Opening day of competition at the Rip Curl Pro Junior Series Mar del Plata in Argentina submitted a preview of the next crop of talent coming out Brazil. Punchy sets with waves in the 3-4 foot range (1 meter) were on hand at Playa Biologia as Rounds 1 and 2 were completed. Deivid Silva (BRA), the defending World Surf League (WSL) South America Men’s Pro Junior champion, started off strong and has already guaranteed a spot in the Round 3.
"Because of the climate here, conditions changed a lot throughout the day, but I did good enough to get past my heats," indicated Silva, who also leads the 2015 WSL South America Men’s Pro Junior campaign after his victory at the Rip Curl Pro Junior in San Bartolo, Peru. "Everybody competing here is really good, so I needed to use a bit of strategy to win my heats. Mar del Plata is a very welcoming place and I’d also like to thank everyone in Brazil."
Despite the Brazilian onslaught, Alonso Correa (PER), took apart his opponents by scoring a 15.25 (out of a possible 20 points) for a solid heat win.
"I had a great day of competition today (Monday) and I’m stoked to be back in Mar del Plata," said Correa. "In my first heat, I got an 8.00 and a 7.25 on my two best waves. In Round 2, the waves weren’t as good as they were in the morning, but I also did enough to get past. I’m going to compete in the QS event here as well, so I’m really excited about the next few days."
In addition to Correa, the only other non-Brazilian to make it to the Round 3 was Nic Hdez (USA). In his heat, Hdez witnessed Victor Bernardo (BRA) dismantle the remaining opponents as he scored an 8.90 and a 8.50 (17.40 total) for the day’s highest heat total.
The women’s division at the Rip Curl Pro Junior Series Mar del Plata will begin on Tuesday. Miluska Tello (PER) won the 2014 WSL South America Pro Junior title and has even greater expectations for 2015. The top-16 girls will face off to determine who will lead the rankings upon conclusion of the event.
