Kobayashi and Marks Return to Form During GromSearch Stop #3

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 August, 2015 - New Smyrna Beach - The Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Banzai Bowls returned once again to the hotbed of East Coast surfing talent for our 3rd stop of the season.

New Smyrna Inlet provided small but rippable 1-3 foot waves that consistently ran across the peaky sandbars as a record setting 90 grom’s battled for coveted final spots and prize money earning victories. With blazing hot temperatures, a few risky thunderstorms, the odd spinner shark, and a rapidly rising tide that threatened to shut down the beach, everyone was kept on their toes all day long but the surfing talent was what stole the show!

After failing to reach the final in GromSearch event #1 (Huntington Beach) and #2 (Kewalos), last year’s National Champ and International runner-up Kei Kobayashi returned to form and took a convincing win in the Boys 16/Under division.

“Yeah I’m definitely trying to defend my National Title for sure and it’s my last year in the GromSearch! I was feeling some pressure because I had a shocker in the first two events and I came to NSB all fired up to take the win and a get a spot in the National final at Uppers! I’m psyched I got the opportunity to have that pressure, I love it. Haha.”

Kobayashi went on to explain the current level at this year’s GromSearch, “I think the level of talent in the GromSearch events are stacked and all the heats are hard. I am more focused this year because I got 2nd in the International final and I want to be one step closer and getting my name on that big list of names!”

Coming in 2nd place while also nailing the Banzai Bowls Maneuver of the Event for a corked out air reverse was last year’s NSB winner, Robbie McComick. McCormick took home $300 courtesy of Banzai Bowls for his air. 3rd went to Luke Gordon, and 4th Micha Cantor.

Speaking of Cantor, he was the event’s only double finalist as he also went on to winning the Boys 14/Under division. The final was as tight as they come as their was a three way tie for first place and it all came down to the tie-breaker. 2nd went to Seth Brown, 3rd Chase Modelski, and 4th Sutton Kerlin.

In the Boys 12/Under, it was a dominant performance by Tommy Coleman who stole the show. Coleman comboed the field as just about every wave in the lineup came straight to the stylish goofy footer. Runner up went to Blake Speir, 3rd place Jett Schiling, and 4th Sebastian Mendes.

Moving on to the Girls 16/Under, another dominating performance by last year’s GromSearch National Champion Caroline Marks left all the other girls in the dust. Marks like Kobayashi was feeling a bit of pressure after losing out in an earlier GS event this season, as she was determined to defend her title at Uppers for the National Final. Runner up went to Rachel Presti, 3rd Emory McClary, 4th Sophie Falzone, 5th Eva Woodland, and 6th Braidyn Cunningham.

With the talent level continuing to rise every year at the GromSearch, surfers are getting hungrier and hungrier to qualify for the National Final. The NSB event saw surfers from Florida, the Carolinas, California, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Barbados, and Costa Rica to make it the most diverse GromSearch event to date.

With the top four finishers from each division qualifying for the RCGS Nationals at Upper Trestles on October 24th, the National champions of the boys and girls 16 & under will both win an all expense paid trip to compete in the RCGS International Final, which will be going on The Search in 2015 to an undisclosed location.

With another successful event in the books, Rip Curl would like to thank all of the families and locals for providing such a pleasant experience. Rip Curl would also like to thank our sponsors: Banzai Bowls, Smith Optics, Kicker Audio, Futures Fins, Surface Sun Systems, Famous Surf, Flexfit, DHD Surfboards, and Wahoo’s Fish Tacos.
