Fred Patacchia wins 2nd consecutive Sobe No Fear/Xcel Pro
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 07 November 2004: - - Sunday will go down as an exceptional day at the beach for Fred Patacchia, the newly crowned, two-time champion of the $52,000 Sobe No Fear Xcel Pro at Sunset Beach and the 2004 Hawaii ASP champion. The waves were up a notch from yesterday with sets in the 5- to 8-foot plus range. Light winds and sunny, blue skies delivered beautiful conditions on the final day of competition for the prestigious, 3-star WQS event.
Sunset lived up to its reputation for being notoriously unpredictable, doling out every kind of wave from hefty and mighty to shifty and tricky. Sunsets always a challengeeveryone knows that, Ross Williams said after winning his quarterfinal heat. The quarterfinal round saw intense competition in extremely tight heats with sudden lead changes and aggressive surfing. The west sides Brian Pacheco stole the show with radical snaps off the top, even finding a little cover-up on the inside.
With a full parking lot and a beach crowded with spectators, the semifinal round got underway. Executing his powerful backside attack, 2002 Xcel Pro champion Fred Patacchia prevailed again, making his third Xcel final in as many years. Also advancing was Hawaiis Dustin Barca, whose fluid and fast surfing launched him into the finals. Heightening the drama, an interference call resulted in the elimination of Sunset standout Ross Williams. Ian Walsh and Brian Pacheco advanced out of the other semifinal heat, setting up what promised to be an explosive, all-Hawaii final.
Giving the surfers a short break before the final heat, the $2,000 Lei Leis Longboard Expression Session with some of the worlds best showcasing the incredible state of progressive longboarding. The thrilling crowd-pleaser saw Dino Miranda getting barreled going switchfoot, Bonga Perkins pulling a giant aerial on the inside, and Lance Hookano with a 360-spin off the whitewater lip. But it was the Big Islands rookie pro, Ned Snow, who walked away with the $1,000 paycheck.
The final was a 40-minute battle to the end. Patacchia traded waves back and forth with Mauis Ian Walsh, upping the ante with each spray-throwing maneuver. Then Dustin Barca snagged four tight, high-speed waves in a row to combo himself into the game. But Brian Pacheco stayed in stride, charging into second place with a series of maneuver-heavy waves. As the minutes ticked away, nobody was able to overtake Patacchias lead. With this win, he secures his second Xcel Pro victory, as well as valuable ASP points that cement his 2004 ASP Hawaii title and bolster his chances of making the elite 2005 WCT. For his unrelenting, impressive performance, he takes home a well-deserved $7,000 paycheck on another glorious day at the beach.
