Close finishes and titles for SUP competitiors

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 September, 2014 - The 2014 Immerse SUP & Paddle Festival came to an exciting close today as the blue-ribbon, 20km Open Ocean Marathon launched at Snapper Rocks with perfect conditions on offer for their run into Currumbin Creek.

A dramatic finish for the Open Men SUP Division saw Mudgeeraba’s Beau O’Brian defeat Kelly Margetts (Currumbin, QLD) after the two narrowly avoided a spectator craft on their sprint to the finish line.

Karla Gilbert (Palm Beach) has successfully defended both Technical Sprint Racing and Marathon Titles after easily taking out today’s marathon. The former Ironwoman battled a head wind into Currumbin Creek, but set herself apart from the pack straight off the start line.

O’Brian and Gilbert will both now appear at the forthcoming Australian SUP & Paddle Titles in October at Currumbin, where they will compete for a chance to represent Australia at the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Games.

2013 Coolangatta Gold Champion, Elizabeth Puimers is on track for a title defense after cruising to victory in today’s Spec Ski division. Pluimers, who has been down with a cold this week said she’s tracking well for this year’s Coolangatta Gold.

“Everything is starting to come together, we’re still a few weeks out so there’s still a lot of training still to come so doing a few little races and hit outs before the Gold will be a great warm up.

Everyone says back-to-back titles are really hard and they’re so right. Mentally more than physically though I think, I always worry that I’m not doing enough or maybe doing too much and trying to back up is definitely hard,” she continued.

The Open Ocean Marathon is the final event of the 2014 Immerse SUP & Paddle Festival. The Queensland SUP & Paddle Team will now be finalized by Surfing Queensland and preparations will begin for a home-turf Australian Titles.

The three-day Immerse SUP & Paddle Festival will provide the exclusive qualification pathway for Queensland athletes aiming to compete at the 2014 Australian SUP Titles, which will also take place on the Gold Coast later this year, and subsequently the 2015 International Surfing Association (ISA) Paddleboard and SUP World Championships.

A full list of results will be available from the 2014 Immerse SUP & Paddle Festival after 10am tommorrow.

The Pathway:

1. 2014 Surfing Queensland Immerse SUP & Paddle Festival
2. 2014 Australian SUP Titles
3. 2015 International Surfing Association Paddleboard & SUP World Championships
