This year marks year 10 of Taj Burrow's signature grom comp

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 January, 2015 - Surfers from all corners of Australasia met today in Yallingup, WA for the official opening ceremony of the 10th anniversary of Taj's Small Fries. Over 100 junior surfers are set to compete in the prestigious three-day event, which will kick off in Yallingup tomorrow.  Competitors and families gathered in mass to surprise event host and surfing legend, Taj Burrow with a customised birthday cake to celebrate the occasion.

After missing out on the recent Hawaiian winter due to shoulder surgery, Burrow has been spending his out of the water busily planning the 10th instalment of is Small Fries junior surfing event. “It's incredible to see the event has risen to be one of the most high profile and iconic in the country,” said Burrow. “I grew up surfing this amazing stretch of coast and it's so rewarding to see the groms come back year after year."

The specialty event officially launches Surfing Western Australia's competition program for 2015, but unlike standard  events, one of the world's best surfers will be on hand to mentor the grommets competing in a spectrum of divisions including 12 & under, 14 & under, as well the blue ribbon 16 & under, catering for both boys and girls.

City of Busselton Counsellor John McCallum said: "The City encourages and supports a healthy active lifestyle. Priding itself as the event capital of WA, what better way to kick off summer in our region than with an event hosted by an international sporting superstar. We have some amazing young surfing talent here in the South West and across Australia. This event both nurtures and showcases this talent and we welcome participants and spectators to this world class surfing hotspot.”

A win at Taj's Small Fries is regarded as a major step in a surfer's competitive career with the list of past winners  including South-West locals Creed McTaggart (Margaret River), Jacob Willcox (Margaret River) and Jack Robinson (Margaret River) who are now internationally renowned surfers in their own rights.
