Summer kicks into high gear in Australia

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 December, 2014 - Gold Coast, Queensland - The first weekend of 2015 is set to kick off with a bang with Australia’s best junior surfers paddling out for the Gold Coast leg of the Subway Summer Surf Series.

The inaugural Subway Summer Surf Series comprises of 13 events Australia wide and has been designed to unearth the best male and female junior surfers in quality waves throughout Australia. Gold Coast is stop 7 of the series and is returning to Queensland after the Sunshine Coast round earlier this year.  Each event is expected to attract as many as 100 surfers vying for the top honour.

This unique series will give entrants the competitive experience needed to further develop their surfing careers as well as test their skills in quality waves.

As an added bonus to the series, the winners of the Under 18 divisions at each event will be invited to respective boys' and girls' 3 day "Subway Summer Surf Camps" at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre. As an added feature to the subway camps the winning participants will have the opportunity to rub shoulders and pick the brains of World Tour athletes and Subway ambassadors Joel Parkinson and Laura Enever at each respective Subway boys' or girls' camp.

Adding to the series already high stakes is the inclusion of the Under 21 Boys and Girls divisions. The Under 21 winners from each event will be given a free wildcard into the 2015 Australian Surfmasters Titles running as part of the Australian Surf Festival.

The new series was created to fill a competition void which exists at a crucial point in the development of Australia’s leading junior surfers.  It represents an important link in the ‘pathway to the podium’ developed by Surfing Australia, with surfers now able to progress from the VEGEMITE SurfGroms program, onto the Wahu Surfer Groms Comps, into the Subway® Summer Surf Series, followed by the Original Source Australian Boardriders Battle.

The Subway® Summer Surf Series will help young Australians continue to develop their passion for surfing, whether it be professionally or recreationally and carry on to enjoy a lifetime of surfing. The series is supported by Billabong, Surfing Australia and Surfing Queensland.
