Teen surfing sensation crowned champion after severe head injury
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 September, 2009 : - - A Teenage surfing sensation has become junior British champion despite a severe head injury forcing her to take a year off competing professionally. Gwen Spurlock, 18, from Swansea, has won both the British and Welsh Junior Surf Championship titles this year after making a full recovery from the injuries she sustained in the 2008 accident.
The Animal and Oakley-sponsored surfer needed four brain operations and missed five months of school during her A-level studies after the accident. She was also unable to compete or surf.

After a year of hard work and determination, she stormed back to the professional competition circuit to win the Welsh junior title in May and has now also claimed the top spot at this months British Junior Surf Championships in Newquay, Cornwall. She said: This competition has meant the most to me as it was my last year as a junior, and it was really important that I won it before I left the junior division. It feels awesome.
