More Swells Approaching Next Week...

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 June, 2014 - The much anticipated swell of this week failed to meet Rip Curl standards this morning, putting the Trials for the 2014 Rip Curl Cup on hold until next week. Surfers and Rip Curl event staff arrived before the sun came up and waited excitedly, hoping to hear the loud pounding of the 2.5 – 3 meter swell smashing on the Padang-Padang reef.

As the sun rose they all watched as a few 4-5 foot waves rolled in, 2-3 waves to a set with sometimes 15-20 minute lulls, so the call went out to stay on standby and make hourly calls. After first calls at 8am, then 9am, and then at 10am, the decision was made not to run today and to postpone the Trials until next week.

“Unfavorable tides and inconsistent waves hitting the reef at Padang-Padang today gave us no choice but to postpone the trials until next week when two more swells are tracking this way. We want to give the local surfers a chance to perform in the best possible conditions for the 2 remaining spots in the main event”, said Rip Curl’s James Hendy.

Bingin Beach was checked several times as a backup location, but was a touch too big on the set waves and the small to medium barreling waves were very short, so it was decided that it wasn’t an option either.
