Semifinals Set - Champions Will Be Crowned Tomorrow
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 October, 2015 - Kenting, Taiwan: The ASC Men’s and Women’s Division Quarterfinals were complete today at the Jialeshuei International Surfing Festival, parsing down the field to the final 8 competitors that will battle it out for the top spot on the podium tomorrow and come away with the victory, cash and valuable ASC championship points.
Fortunately the anticipated drop in the swell didn’t materialize as was forecast but actually increased if anything, though accompanied by strong onshore winds that offered some challenges in some of the heats yet remained very contestable in the 3-4 foot range for the duration of the day’s competition.
In the ASC Men’s Division it’s down to four Indonesian competitors, three of which have one or more Indonesian and/or Asian surfing championship titles to their credit.
In Semifinal 1 tomorrow it will be 3-time ASC Champion goofyfooter Raditya Rondi up against regular footer and 2010 Indonesian Men’s/Pro Junior Champion Putra Hermawan, and in Seminfinal 2 it will be 2008 Indonesian Champion and 2014 ASC Champion Dede Suryana taking on Mega Semadhi, who has a Padang-Padang Cup trophy in his collection.
In the ASC Women’s Division it’s a truly international affair with Japan, the Philippines, and Indonesia all represented.
In Seminfinal 1, 2013 ASC Champion Rina Kitazawa from Japan will be up against 13 year old Taina Izquierdo from Indonesia, and in Seminfinal 2 the Philippine’s Nilbie Blancada takes on Japan’s Miyasaka Rioko.
Nilbie posted today’s highest single wave score of 8.33 and the highest combined heat score of 14.83, an impressive feat in the tricky conditions where most scores were just in the average range.
“I was nervous when I went out there today because it looked like it would be hard to find high scoring waves,” said Nilbie after her heat. “But once I got out there I found that the waves were better than they looked. I could hit the lip and make some good turns, and even make a little air and a chop hop at the end of my best wave. I hope I can do as well tomorrow as it would be great to come home with win!”
And taking the win would be the only way that Nilbie can stop Rina from taking home the 2015 ASC Women’s Championship, as the title race is down to the wire with only one event left in the season.
With a win tomorrow, Rina can seal the 2015 Women’s Championship, but if she gets second or equal third and Nilbie wins, the title will be decided at the final event of the year at the Rote Open in Indonesia in November.
In the ASC Men’s Open its down to Dede Suryana and Raditya Rondi vying for the 2015 Championship crown, to be be decided at the final event of the year in Rote.
So stay tuned for the exciting conclusion to this great event as the championship race adds another dimension to the pressure these surfers will be under tomorrow!
This is the first ASC sanctioned event to take place in the Kenting area, where Asia's best men and women surfers including 3 previous ASC Men's Champions and a previous ASC Women Champion have come to Taiwan to join over 200 other competitors for three days of competition and good times at the area's most popular surf spot of Jialeshuei.
In the ASC Men's division has a field of 24 competitors from Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan, Canada, the USA, Hawaii, and England, competing for the $5,000 USD prize purse on offer, and the Women's Division with 12 competitors representing Indonesia, Taiwan, Japan, and the Philippines chasing their share of the $3,000 USD prize pot.
