Komunity Project stoked with Slater win
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 April, 2010 : - - Komunity Project are stoked to announce, Founder and Surf Accessories team rider Kelly Slater rings the Bell by winning the 2010 Rip Curl Pro -Bells Beach. Kelly Slater 38, nine-time ASP World Champion, has claimed his fourth Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach title over reigning two-time ASP World Champion Mick Fanning in clean three-to-four foot waves at the backup venue of Johanna Beach in Victoria Australia.
Despite suffering a hairline fracture in his right foot three days ago, Kelly was able to push himself to a record 42nd elite tour victory, and today's win marks his fourth at Bells Beach, matching the historic record set by legendary Australian Mark Richards in the 1970s. Earlier in the day, he gained motivation as his golfing friend Fred Couples became the oldest man to lead the Masters at Augusta.
Kelly said in an interview after the comp that, "I'm really excited because I remembered that before this contest I promised myself that if I won; I would give to trophy to the Wathaurong (local aboriginal tribe) people. I didn't remember that until I was out in the water and right when I did, those waves came. So before I give it to them, I want to pass the trophy around for everyone to give a ring because that's never been done before."
He then passed around the huge bell trophy that Rip Curl awards the winner every year, but not before giving the trophy away to the local Wathaurong Aboriginal tribe, thanking them in the process for letting the contest happen on their land. And as if he hadnt showcased his talents enough, he started jamming on the didgeridoo with the local boys.
Today's win sees Kelly move from 9th to 2nd on the elite ASP World Tour rankings, setting up his campaign for an unprecedented 10th ASP World Title.
Komunity Project - Executive Director Paul Munten said, 'the only thing that you can say is Kelly is clearly the best surfer of all time. He lets his surfing do the talking and the team at KP are stoked with his win. It just shows having the right equipment is everything.
