Rip Curl GromSearch stop #2

Lakey Peak Sumbawa
22 - 23 March 2014

More than 60 young surfers congregated at Lakey to compete

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 March, 2014 - Stop #2 of the Rip Curl GromSearch was held in Sumbawa over the weekend and saw the best young surfers from all over Indonesia compete in flawless 3ft conditions at the famous break - Lakey Peak.

Over 60 young surfers congregated at Lakey to compete in the 2nd stop of the SE Asia series – some looking to qualify for a spot in the national final held in Lembongan Island, Bali in September. Competitors were blessed with some of the best waves ever seen in the events history with 3 ft glassy rippable conditions being served up all weekend giving kids the perfect playground to show off their best skills.

Competitors arrived at the spot during Thursday and Friday and were greeted with solid 4 – 5 ft waves giving them a chance to paddle out at the spot and get at least 2 days of training in before Competition day on Sunday. Local surfers were standout’s on the days prior to competition showing the other kids where to sit in the line-up and how to get the best waves.

Lakey Peak standout Junior Andre Anwar commented: “its really cool to see everyone coming to our home break for the GromSearch, for sure this is the highlight of the year for the Lakey Peak Boardriders and all the Grommet’s.

Standout performances of the weekend were seen across all divisions, in particular the Under 12’’s with the pint-sized Kian Martin on a winning streak. Surfing with determination Kian won every heat on the way to the final where he claimed 1st place with impressive vertical backhand hacks and a full grab-rail barrel.  In second Place was an on-form Tenshi Ishii who surfed really strong on his forehand with Varun Tandjung and 9 year old Kona Eru also proving that the smallest of Groms can do the damage..

In the under 14’s division it was Ketut Agus who put the pressure on all weekend and claimed first place over local Lakey boy Ompu Anwar (2nd) Takuto Ohata from Japan ( 3rd) and Daniel Martin in 4th. Under 16’s division was also a hard fought battle with Bali Boys Raju Sena and Rio Walda looking sharp but getting taken down by locals in the Semi’s with only Mega Artana left to represent Bali in the Finals up against 3 Boys from Lakey Peak.  After a nail biting 20 minute final it was Lakey knowledge that won through with Armansah Bahrudin talking the win with the only full tube-ride of the final. Bali’s Mega Artana came in 2nd with Finda Ramlin and Febby Andre in 3rd and 4th consecutively.

Congratulations goes to the 2 local surfers Armansah Bahrudin and Finda Ramlin who won all expenses paid tickets to the National Finals to be held at Lembongan Island in September this year.
Other local surfer to win a place in the National Finals were Febby Andre and Sah Jay.

Last but not least was the Girls Division, who were on fire all weekend proving that they have got what its takes to keep up with the ever growing talent pool that is coming out of Indonesia. All  8 contestants in the Girls division came from Bali surfed amazing taking off as deep as the boys and charging through full rail turns and the odd “shampoo barrel” on the inside.

The Johnson Sisters – Puanani (15) and Kailani (12) surfed very strong both winning spots into the Final where they surfed against Hayana Iguchi and Summa Longbottom. After a great final seeing some of the best Girls Surfing in the event, it was the strength and power of Puanani Johnson that helped her claim 1st place with consistent solid turns all the way down the line.
Second place was a very Hayana Iguchi showing off her wicked backhand  off-the-top with Summa Longbottom in  3rd and Kailani Johnson in 4th.

A big shout-out to all the Girls for very gutsy performances over the day with Highest placed Under 14’s result going to - Hayana Iguchi (1st) Summa Longbottom (2nd) Kailani Johnson (3rd) with Taina Angel Izquerdo and Cinta Hansel in equal 4th place.
