McTavish Surfboards narrows focus to Byron

Industry Updates

Brand exits licensing deal with Global Surf Industries

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 September, 2014 - McTavish Surfboards today announced it would focus exclusively on bespoke custom surfboard production from its Byron Bay headquarters. “We’ve been making boards for over 50 years now, and with the growing commercialisation of surfing, our customers are increasingly valuing authentic custom hand-made boards” Bob McTavish said.

“While the brand is well known around the world, the reality is McTavish is a very small business. There are only 15 of us on the team in Byron Bay, striving to produce a world-class product. Our factory team has over 300 years combined industry experience”

“Getting the right advice is critical when you are ordering a custom board. And that can be very difficult. We really enjoy working one on one with the customer to build their ideal board, going into great detail to ensure everything from the design and shape, through to artwork and finish are right for them, and for where they surf”

“We focus on building the highest quality surfboards that are both functional and works of art. We believe that if you buy a custom McTavish, you’re buying a one-off that you can pass down through the generations”

Part of the new direction for McTavish will be a departure from its international licensing and distribution agreement with Global Surf Industries.

McTavish paid tribute to GSI saying “The relationship was successful and we learnt a lot but we had to decide to either get a lot bigger or go back to what we really loved….making great custom boards for surfers who really understand us and what we are trying to achieve. We have decided to be a very different company”
