Boscombe character used van to promote child safety
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 27 January, 2015 - The van used to take Surfer Bob to local charities around Boscombe, UK has been destroyed in a suspected arson attack. Chris Wakefield, who dresses up in a foam costume and promotes child safety in and around Bournemouth said he will continue to help children despite the setback.
The van had been converted from an older ambulace and was a sight around town as Surfer Bob promoted beach safety and informed kids of 'stranger dangers'. The van was also used promotionally during area beach cleanups.
"A van can be replaced but this was something a lot of people put their heart and soul into it - it's not something you can get back," Wakefield told BBC News
The van was uninsured at the time of being set on fire. In addition Surfer Bob now faces having to pay for the damage caused to the tarmac and surrounding fence from the blaze.
No arrests have been made and Dorset Fire and Rescue told the BBC "It is believed that the van had been set on fire deliberately and officers are investigating."
