Wild conditions force finals of NSW Bodyboard State Titles to relocate

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 14 July, 2014 - Crowdy Gap Beach, Crowdy Head - Wild five-to-six foot waves forced the finals of the NSW Bodyboard State Titles to relocate mid-event to Crowdy Gap Beach from its previous location of Crowdy Head back beach. Despite several competitors tackling the solid surf with a combination of fearlessness and bravado, contest organisers opted to shift the event to a safer environment to complete the all-important final heats.

Greg Arnold (Avoca) made up for his fourth place finish in the first round of the NSW Bodyboard State Titles when he took the win in the Open Drop Knee division. The Central Coast bodyboarder managed to lock in a solid score of 13.83 (out of a possible 20 points) to move past event standouts Martin Fowler (Adamstown Heights), Corey O’Donnell (Copacabana) and Dion Myers (North Boambee Valley).

Arnold was able to back up the Drop Knee victory with another win in the Masters division.

Noah Gillroy (Botany) and former event champion Harry Crain (Copacabana) made light work of the tricky conditions when they went neck-and-neck for victory in the Groms division final. When the final hooter sounded, both Noah and Harry had locked in 12.83 heat totals, however after a count-back to the highest individual wave score, the win was handed to Gillroy.

Local surfer and event standout Jake Dunn (Harrington) consolidated on his previous heat brilliance with an awesome performance in the finals of the Cadets division. The bodyboarder stole the win away from Joshua Bridger (Kiama Downs), Nathan Wilson (Kiama Downs) and Joseph Halkyard (Avalon) who both finished in second, third and fourth respectively.

Joe Bourke (Copacabana) added another feather to his already bulging cap when he netted a win in the Junior Boys division and the Open Mens division. Bourke, who took out the Open Mens division in the first NSW Bodyboard State Titles event was able to lock in heat scores in excess of 16 points to claim both wins and as a result booked his spot into the upcoming Australian Surf Festival.

Teigan Gillet (Martinsville) was victorious in the Junior Womens division taking the win away from Sophie Leathers (Dorrigo) and sister Sam Gillett (Martinsville).

Total points from the previous round in Kiama and this event in Harrington will be tallied and used to select the team to represent NSW at the 2014 national titles, which will take place at the Australian Surf Festival in Coffs Harbour in August. Bodyboarders who qualified for the event will be notified this week.

Surfing NSW implemented a free club challenge at the second State Title event. The relay-like style format was taken out by the Maroubra bodyboard team who claimed $250.00 for their efforts.

The NSW Bodyboard State Titles Round 2 is proudly sponsored by Greater Taree City Council, HIF, Australian Skin Cancer Clinics, Carve, Ohana Ocean Athletics and Surfing NSW.
