High Performance Action Presides at Oceano Santa Catarina Pro
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 October, 2014 - Praia da Joaquina, Florianopolis, Santa Catarina - Warm weather with sunny skies, steadily increasing winds and waves in the 2-3 foot range (0.5 meter) were on hand for another long day of competition at the ASP 6-Star Oceano Santa Catarina Pro at Praia da Joaquina in Florianopolis, Brazil.
A marathon of 24 heats throughout the day portrayed a diverse display of high performance surfing. Rapid turns, powerful carves and numerous aerials highlighted the event on Thursday. The day began with clean conditions and light offshore winds in conjunction with the low tide.
However, as the forecast predicted, a strong increase in winds from the N/NE made wave selection crucial in each heat. Wiggolly Dantas (BRA), who has qualified for the 2015 World Championship Tour (WCT) with his performance yesterday, continued his stellar execution by winning his heat over Gony Zubizarreta (ESP), Kiron Jabour (HAW) and Perth Standlick (AUS) in Heat 1 of Round of 48.
"I got a good right at the end to get me into 1st, but it’s not easy finding the right ones out there," stated Dantas. "I feel very focused for this event, my boards feel good and it’s great to be competing in Florianopolis. Since I’ve already qualified for the WCT, I want to become QS champ this year. So I’m just taking it heat by heat and event by event until I reach my goal."
Unlike Dantas, Tanner Hendrickson (HAW) is way behind in the rankings and is looking for a strong result to boost his position on the QS. However, in the water Hendrickson looked extremely comfortable on the waves at Praia da Joaquina as he defeated former WCT surfer Nathan Hedge (AUS) and Raphael Seixas (BRA) in Heat 2 of Round of 48. "Yeah, it’s tricky. I’m from a place with a lot of wind, so I kind of grew up dealing with it," said Hendrickson. "Going on these rights is tough enough, but the wind is so strong that it’s slowing me down. Either way, I’m just stoked to get through. I brought some small wave boards and I’m mentally and physically ready. I’m stoked and I’m ready to do this and take it all the way hopefully."
The ASP Qualification Series ranking continue to shuffle with top seeds being eliminated. Keanu Asing (HAW), Jesse Mendes (BRA), Willian Cardoso (BRA) and Charles Martin (GLP) were in the qualification range, but were sent home today after losses at the ASP 6-Star Oceano Santa Catarina Pro. On the other hand, several athletes have seized the opportunity to shoot up in the rankings.
Tomas Hermes (BRA), Brent Dorrington (AUS), Maxime Huscenot (FRA), Carlos Munoz (CRI), Torrey Meister (HAW) and Italo Ferreira (BRA) all advanced in competition at Praia da Joaquina on Thursday. "I’m happy I making my heats, but there’s still a long way to go before qualifying for the WCT," declared Italo Ferreira, who now holds the final position in the group of 10 surfers that will qualify for the 2015 Dream Tour.
"I just want to surf well and win heats because the results will come. I caught some good rights and boosted some airs, so I feel good for tomorrow (Friday)." Brent Dorrington spoke about his strategy to distance himself from the other competitors after his victory in Heat 5 in Round of 48. "I had been watching the heats before mine and I’d seen that little right breaking, so I thought I’d give it a crack. It ended up paying off," said Dorrington. "It had a nice shape from the get go, so I got to a few little jams and it turned out to be an 8-point ride. Yeah, it was nice to get over to where no one could bother you. The guys all wanted lefts, so I let them have that. I had my rights, so it felt like a freesurf. It was fun."
In regards to his current position on the QS and the remaining contests in 2014, he added: "I think I’m at about 80th at the moment. The first Prime event I surfed this year was in Portugal and I didn’t have much luck. I’m going to the event in Haleiwa and hopefully this result will get me into Sunset. I just want to get some bigger waves there. If I do well, I’m sure to participate in all the Primes next year. I love competing again, so it’s fun. I injured a ligament in my ankle and it took me over a month to heal, so I’m pumped just to be surfing again. My goal is to qualify for the CT and surf against all the lads, that’s the dream."
A call is set for 7:30 am (local time) on Friday for the start of Round of 24 of the ASP 6-Star Oceano Santa Catarina Pro. Heat 1 will include Wiggolly Dantas (BRA), Tanner Hendrickson (HAW) and Davey Cathels (AUS).
