A Palmboom in Every Final at St Mikes

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 6 June, 2005 : - - There was a surfer from the Palmboom family in every final at the weekend’s Rip Curl GromSearch event held at St Mikes on Kwa Zulu Natal’s south coast. The third stop on the 2005 nationwide surfing talent search attracted 75 of the region’s top U16 surfers.

Epic, flawless surf conditions on Saturday made way for a gale force south westerly wind with blown out 1.5-metre waves for Sunday’s finals.

Local surfer Brian Palmboom (Shelley Beach) blitzed the U/16 boy’s final posting a 9.0 and 9.5-points to finish with an outstanding 18.5 out of a possible 20 points. Brian, the older brother of fellow finalist Brett Palmboom was ecstatic not only to break out of his recent unlucky spell of bowing out in the semi-finals but of clinching an important victory in front of his home crowd. Second placed David Defilippi (Hibberdene) scored a credible heat tally of 14 out of 20 points. A narrow margin separated third placed Rip Curl Team surfer Gareth Moys (St Mikes) and Brett Palmboom. All four U16 finalists are current Southern Kwa Zulu Natal team members.

Michelle Imerson (Warner Beach) left no room for the other U16 girls to catch her in the action packed 25-minute final which saw 12 year old Heidi Palmboom (Bluff) getting washed over the rocks by a wave on the point which damaged her board. Grace Rheeders (Morningside) celebrated her birthday (Sunday, 05 June) by placing second in the final despite only catching one wave. Palmboom (cousin of Brett and Brian) ended up in third with Rip Curl’s Julia Morris (Scottburgh) trailing in fourth.

The U14 Boy’s title was claimed by out of town surfer Nicolas Godfrey (Cape St Francis) who took ownership of his second Rip Curl GromSearch victory of the year. Brett Palmboom’s hard work in two finals paid off as he clinched second place. Blake Freeguard (Umdloti) finished third in his first GromSearch final with 2004 U12 event winner Ryan Klynsmith (Winkelspruit) in fourth.

10 year old Warner Beach surfer Michael Venter carved out a name for himself in the testing surf. Venter was on form throughout the U12 Boy’s heats and managed to keep his momentum going right through to the final which he won in style. Jean du Plessis (East London) enjoyed surfing in warmer water to place second ahead of plucky twelve year old Heidi Palmboom (Bluff) who once again bruised egos en route to the boy’s final. David van Zyl who has grown up surfing the waves on the Durban beachfront placed fourth.

The St Mike’s Rip Curl GromSearch event ran smoothly thanks to the effort from the Southern Kwa Zulu Natal Surfing Association led by Andre Botha, Ant Brodowicz, Lynne Maisch and Mark Pereira.

The top two under 16 boys and top under 16 girl from each of the eight Rip Curl GromSearch events automatically qualify to compete in the Grand Final held in Durban on November 26 and 27. At this event an all expenses paid ticket to compete at Bells Beach in Easter 2006 will be at stake for the U16 boy and girl winners.

With less than a week to go until the fourth Rip Curl GromSearch entries are pouring in. The contest takes place next weekend at Ballito on KZN’s north coast (June 11 & 12). The remaining events take place at Mossel Bay on 2 & 3 July, Point in Jeffreys Bay on 30 & 31 July, Boland on October 8 & 9 and Durban on October 29 & 30.
