The Rip Curl GromSearch

GromSearch Series
New Smyrna Beach, Florida
9 August, 2014

Robbie McCormick took first place in two divisions in New Smyrna

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 August, 2014 - The Rip Curl GromSearch presented by mophie hit the road once again, heading back to the East Coast for it’s annual trek along the right coast. The third stop of the series landed itself in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, where humid 90-degree temperatures along with spinner sharks jumping through the lineup, didn’t stop the 84 frothing contestants from putting on a show for the packed beach of spectators! Clean, offshore 2-3 foot peaks greeted competitors in the morning, and the swell lasted through the afternoon offering contestable conditions. With 16 RCGS National invite spots on the line, the young boys and girls from across the East Coast showed up ready to do battle.

Last year’s 12 and under champion, Robbie McCormick, was the clear standout of the day and achieved a feat the GromSearch hasn’t seen in over two years (last being Kanoa Igarashi in Huntington Beach). 13-year old McCormick, took victories in both the 16 & 14 under divisions. McCormick completed multiple airs throughout the day, but most impressive was a clean backside rotator, which sealed the 16 under victory.

“I’ve been trying to train a lot more and NSB has always been one of my favorite waves on the East Coast,” explained McCormick on what it took to take the double victory, “I pretty much grew up surfing here. The GromSearch is fun because I surf heats with all my best friends from up and down the coast.”

Runner-up in the boys 16 and under went to Logan Hayes, third place to Luke Gordon, and fourth place, Caleb Goepfert.

The girls 16 and under welcomed many newcomers to the podium. All four girls hadn’t previously made a GromSearch final and were ecstatic to be awarded with trophies, cash, and prizes. Taking the big win was Avery Aydelotte, who put together the highest score of the final (8.5), and was the clear champion.  Second place went to Braidyn Cunningham, third place to Hannah Blevins, and rounding out the heat in fourth, Eva Woodland.

For the boys 14 and under division, the aforementioned Robbie McCormick, took the nail-biter victory against Luke Gordon in the dying moments of the heat, winning by less than 0.5. Third place went to Chase Elmore, and fourth Jett Schilling, who was the only other double finalist of the day.

Californian Jett Schilling flew across country to battle with the East Coast’s best in the super grom division 12 and under. Jett looked right at home in the peaky conditions and dominated throughout the day, as he added a large check to his carry-on for the flight home.  Runner up went to South Carolina’s Seth Brown, third place to Blake Speir, and fourth to Blake Elmore.

With all four finalists of each division qualifying for the RCGS Nationals at Upper Trestles on October 25th, the National champions of the boys and girls 16 & under will both win an all expense paid trip to compete in the RCGS International Final, which will be going on The Search in 2015 to an undisclosed location.

The next week GromSearch series moves on to Jennette’s Pier, Nags Head, NC August 15th or 16th.
