Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 April, 2015 - Point Impossible, Victoria - Round 1 of the HIF Victorian Longboard Titles has been completed in perfect 2-3ft waves Point Impossible with former State Champions Rob Emslie (Ocean Grove) and Molly Powell (Anglesea) taking out the Open Men’s and Women’s divisions.

After taking a hiatus from competition surfing for over 5 years due to injuries, Emslie excelled in the offshore conditions executing a mix of power surfing and traditional manoeuvres.
Locking in a heat total of 14.20, Emslie took down younger surfer Liam Griggs-Kennelly (Aireys Inlet) who finished on 11.90 points in second. Arturo Tallarida (Mount Martha) finished in third on 11.57 with Oscar Lalor (Apollo Bay) in fourth on 8.17 points.
“The last time I surfed a state titles event was back in 2008. I spent a few years on the couch with stress fractures in my back and I just missed surfing so I decided to give it a go” said Emslie.
“I had no real expectations, but the waves were pumping. It’s a shame the wind came up in the last bit of the final.”
Molly Powell (Anglesea) continued her domination of Victorian longboard surfing over the past few years by taking out the first round and setting herself up to claim a fourth consecutive state title.
Coming up against current Australian Open Women’s champion, Emma Webb (Jan Juc), Powell opened up a strong lead in the final with 6.00 and 8.17 point rides before backing it up with a 7.80 ride in the final minutes.
Powell finished on a heat total of 15.97 in front of Webb’s 14.34 heat total. Placing in third was Sam Suendermann (Anglesea) on 13.57 points with Morgan Griggs-Kennelly (Aireys Inlet) on 6.93 points.
Other winners throughout the day were John Lane (Jan Juc), Bob Smith (Jan Juc), Greg Brown (Jan Juc), Billy Whitton (Barwon Heads), Ben Considine (Barwon Heads), Grant Price (Lorne), Michael Pinney (Point Lonsdale), Morgan Griggs-Kennelly (Aireys Inlet), Emma Webb (Jan Juc).
Taking out the highest wave and heat total of the day was Ben Considine (Barwon Heads) who scored a 9.67 point wave in the Open Men’s Logger final on his way to a 19.10 heat total.
