Surf community gathers to remember a special human being
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 23 May, 2015 - A paddle out was held today for Shawn ‘Barney’ Barron who passed away last week. Longtime friends, locals and many others of the Santa Cruz surf community paddled out at Mitchell’s Cove in Santa Cruz.
The memorial consisted of lei’s, splashes and kind words of remembrance for one of Santa Cruz’s most-loved surfers.
Barney's exploits—documented in shakey, lo-fi glory in Josh Pomer's The Kill series, and especially some of Volcom's early masterpieces—were something to behold. His parts in Stoney Baloney and Magnaplasm were some of the most groundbreaking minutes in 90's surf films—massive late-90s Mavs bombs, barrel rolls, Barney flips, the guy was electric in the water.
Barron died on May 5 of an apparent heart attack. He was 44 years old.
