New series created to fill void to link 'pathway to podium'

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 September, 2014 - Surfers in Under-16 and Under-18 divisions will be vying for top honours in the brand new Subway® Summer Surf Series when the first competition of the 13-event series kicks off on Sydney’s Northern Beaches this weekend.

Participants will compete to win the chance to attend a three-day Subway® Surf Camp at the renowned Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre at Casuarina. The camp, conducted by Australia’s leading surf coaches, will provide participants with the guidance and training they need to make the transition from surfer to professional athlete.

“The Subway® Summer Surf Series is the perfect new platform for kids who are edging towards Junior Qualifying Series events,” said Surfing NSW CEO Mark Windon. “Surfing NSW has had the pleasure of seeing a lot of the entrants before in micro-grom events.  Now that they have progressed to the next level, we’re definitely expecting a solid performance from a lot of the surfers when the event kicks off on Saturday.”

The main base for event one of the Subway® Summer Surf Series is Dee Why, with back-up locations of Curl Curl, Long Reef and Collaroy.

All competitors are advised to ring the event hotline (0458 247 212) by 6.45am on the days of competition to confirm location and running order.

Organised by Surfing Australia and proudly supported by Billabong, the Subway® Summer Surf Series will be held around Australia this summer with New South Wales hosting five of the 13 events. Each event is expected to attract as many as 100 surfers.

The new series was created to fill a competition void, which exists at a crucial point in the development of Australia’s leading junior surfers.  It represents an important link in the ‘pathway to the podium’ developed by Surfing Australia, with surfers now able to progress from the VEGEMITE SurfGroms program, onto the Wahu Surfer Groms Comps, into the Subway® Summer Surf Series, followed by the Original Source Australian Boardriders Battle.

The aim of the Subway® Summer Surf Series is to  help young Australians continue to develop their passion for surfing, whether it be professionally or recreationally and carry on to enjoy a lifetime of surfing.

Ambassadors for the Subway® Summer Surf Series are ASP World Tour competitor and 2012 World Champion Joel Parkinson and leading ASP World Tour female competitor Laura Enever.
