Surfing Life’s Oakley Big Wave Awards open for entries
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 December, 2015 - Mind-blowing big waves from all over Australia and New Zealand have been ridden in 2015, and the best of the best are once again in the running for Surfing Life’s Oakley Big Wave Awards. Famous for rewarding rides that have both forged careers and broken bones, the BWAs have become the longest running and most prestigious big wave competition in the Southern Hemisphere. But this year, there’s at least one major difference.
Throughout its storied 13-year history the contest has always strived to simultaneously progress big wave surfing and handsomely reward the most deserving madmen at the forefront of it all. In 2015 however, the evolution of the sport has prompted a shift in criteria for the massive winner’s cheque. Prizes will now be awarded with the main focus being on Best Overall Ride, chosen from those deemed most worthy from each category – Biggest Paddle-in, Biggest Slab, and of course, Biggest Wave.
The change in format has come about as a direct result of feedback from the surfers and shooters most passionate about this unpredictable and electrifying pursuit. These dedicated (and slightly crazy) professionals hold an ever-increasing respect for the importance and bravado associated with big wave Paddle-In surfing and Slab surfing. The Big Wave Award’s latest incarnation will provide equal chance and reward for those surfers tackling waves under paddle-power, or those tackling waves thicker than they are high.
Surfing Life’s Oakley Big Wave Awards will be held on Wednesday March 2nd at the Wharf Bar in Manly, with entries closing on January 26th. Event organisers are calling out to all potential entrants to get their entries in, before it’s too late!
