Ten Years Ago Today: Billabong book, ASR & Windansea

Surf Culture

January 16 of 2004 news clips provide window to the past

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 January, 2015 - Surfersvillage global news has been around since the nineties. During that time we've seen the rise and fall and rise of many facets to our amazing culture. Pro contests, brands, trends, new surf spots and more have all left their digital footprint in our archives. Digging through the Surfersvillage library this week we found a memorial, a vanity book project and a decadent trade show...

The first news item is on the memorial for Chuck Halsey who founded the Windansea Surf Club in 1962. The news item reads that because Halsey did not like cold water, his ashes would be scattered during the summertime at Windansea.

Also in the news, Billabong launched their 152-page coffee table book “Only A Surfer Knows The Feeling.” It was the height of corporate stroke jobs and if you’ll remember you’ll find most of us were wearing simple t-shirts with surf corporate logos. Simple, profitable times indeed…

We also found a notice for the now-defunct Action Sports Retail show in San Diego. The show went belly up a few years ago but was the annual gathering of the surf industry tribe. The event has been replaced (to some extent) by The Agenda Show.
