Those painful slabs return for Australian Surf Movie Fest

Year's biggest, baddest surf caught in annual film tour

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 November, 2014 - Maroubra big wave surfer Mark Mathews teams up with Taj Burrow in the latest instalment of the Australian Surf Movie Festival, to be screened at the Ritz Cinema Randwick on Thursday.

“One of the main sessions I’m excited to watch is from early this year, at a wave called ‘the Right’ in Western Australia - some of the biggest barrels ever ridden in Australia went down on this trip,” Mathews said.

Australian Surf Movie Festival director Tim Bonython said: “Each year I am searching for the greatest moments the ocean can offer. This is about surfers versus nature and the pure exhilaration of what the ocean can deliver”.

In September Bonython was invited to a Tahiti shoot for Point Break 2. “When we weren’t shooting the stunt doubles in the film, I had the opportunity to shoot the general surfers on what was the best day of the year,” Bonython said.

“Back in Australia there was a trip back to WA where over three days we documented three incredible spots. One called Cow Bombie down near Margaret River, then we got a call from a friend who has a plane that was willing to fly us 15 hours north of Perth to a spot called Gnaraloo where we returned on the same day. The following day we jumped onto his speed boat where the boys surfed an aggressive reef break off Rottness Island.”
