Grommets shine in tiny surf at the Wahu Surfer Groms Comp at Cronulla
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 22 December, 2014 - Wanda Beach - The final Wahu Surfer Groms Comp for 2014 wrapped up in crystal clean one-foot waves today between Wanda and Elouera on Cronulla’s northern stretch.
Jake Feher (Matraville) found a winning formula in the Under-8 Mixed division, locking himself into several lefthanders, which allowed him to notch up at 11.16 heat total (out of a possible 20 points). As a result the Eastern Suburbs local managed to get the jump on Koby Jackson (Tabourie Lake) who claimed the runner-up spot.
Oceanna Rodgers’ (Shell Cove) made her intentions known in the first final of the Under-10 Girls, successfully posting a 9.00 ride (out of a possible ten points) to get the edge over her fellow competitors. Rodgers was able to also claim a runner-up finish in her second final, which gave her a solid accumulative total and allowed her to claim victory.
The Under-10 Boys proved to be the standout division of the entire event with a handful of surfers locking in massive scores for critical maneuvers, however Nate Hopkins (Noraville) managed to reign supreme, thanks to some solid backhand hooks and snaps.
Cedar Leigh-Jones (Avalon) added another Wahu Surfer Groms Comp trophy to her already overflowing mantelpiece, claiming the Under-12 Girls. The talented goofy-footer got away to an early lead, which left runner-up Summa Longbottom (North Wollongong) chasing an elusive 7.97 wave score, which unfortunately didn’t turn up. Gabi Spake (Collaroy) and Charlie Hurst (Windang) both showed moments of brilliance, but ultimately had to be happy with third and fourth respectively.
Kobi Clements (Narrabeen) and Joel Vaughan (Bateau Bay) fought a series of tight heats over the course of the Under-12 Boys, with both surfers posting some solid scores for big stylish turns. Nevertheless, when the final got underway, Vaughan managed to get the edge thanks to a sneaky 4.2 wave score, which gave him the edge over Grayson Hinrichs (Bondi), Clements and Kieran Woolley (Minnamurra) who claimed second, third and fourth respectively.
Bodhi Leigh-Jones (Avalon) claimed her third 2014/2015 Wahu Surfer Groms Comp title, taking out the Under-14 Girls. The Northern Beaches secured the win, thanks to a near perfect peak, which allowed Leigh-Jones to nail a massive crack in the pocket of the wave and get the upper hand against her fellow finalists.
Jackson Roberts (Bateau Bay) claimed his second Wahu Surfer Groms Comp title in as many events, bagging the win in the Under-14 Boys. Roberts went neck-and-neck with local and recent Surf Dive N Ski Australian Junior Titles competitor Jay Brown (Lilli Pilli) in the final and up until the final 20 seconds, it appeared as though Brown would bring home the bacon, however the local surfer unfortunately fell victim to a critical interference call, which saw him slide into second position and consequently hand the first place trophy to Roberts.
The main base for event six of the Wahu Surfer Groms Comp series was North Cronulla Beach with backup locations of Wanda, Elouera and Sandshoes.
Regarded as one of the major stepping stones in the development of young Australian surfers, the 10-event Wahu Surfer Groms Comps caters for surfers from Under 8 to Under 14 and will be held in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania. The Under 8 will be a mixed division with parent assists, while competition will be held in both boys and girls in the Under 10, Under 12 and Under 14 divisions.
As an added bonus, the respective winners of the Under 14 boys' and girls' divisions from each event will receive an invite to attend an all-expenses paid, three-day Wahu Surf Camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre.
It just wasn't all about the action in the water at the Wahu Surfer Groms Comps with plenty of beach games to keep everyone entertained, while each entrant also received a Wahu Surfer Groms Comps t-shirt plus a Wahu beach product.
A qualified chef fired up the Everdure barbie to ensure the hordes of grommets and staff didn't go hungry. The Everdure Sausage Sizzle fed the crew on both days of competition and will do so at all 10 events.
The Wahu Surfer Groms Comps are proudly supported by Everdure Barbeques, Surfing Australia and Surfing NSW.
