Surfer may boycott Saunton car park after price hike

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 27 December, 2014 - A surfer who has been visiting Saunton since the 1960s may boycott the beach’s car park after what he sees as a sudden and excessive price increase. The site’s owner is adding £50 on to the price of a season ticket, according to Tim Schlapfer from Ilfracombe.

“That’s a serious chunk of dough,” he said. “You’re not getting anything extra for that – there are still potholes everywhere.”

Last year Tim paid £125 for a ticket so he could park at Saunton whenever he wanted to walk his dog or catch a few waves. So he was “livid” when he went to renew the annual ticket only to be told the new price was £175.

He insists the beach should be accessible to everyone despite being privately owned. Having refused to renew his ticket, Tim has written an angry letter to the car park’s owner.

Paul Tamlyn the director of Saunton Beach Enterprises, wrote back, saying the price was still affordable, especially when compared to what one-off visitors have to pay.
