Wahu Surfer Groms make good use of poor conditions

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 January, 2014 -- The seventh stop of the Wahu Surfer Groms Comp national series kicked off today on the Gold Coast, with day one commencing at the iconic Burleigh Heads.

Despite mediocre conditions, some of Australia’s youngest and finest surfers made good use of the 1m, southerly-effected swell and did a good job of keeping the judges busy with several high-scoring rides dropping throughout the day.

Lennox Chell (Avoca, NSW) set the benchmark early in the Under 12 boys division, scoring the highest heat total of 15.85 (out of a possible 20 points), and confidently progressed through to round two with a heat win under his belt.

In the girls divisions, the star was Tweed Heads local, Alyssa Lock in the Under 14 Girls after banking the highest single-wave score of 7.83. After the bout, Lock said that conditions were rough, but it made for a sweet victory. Other standouts for the day include Zahli Kelly (Wooloowin, QLD), Zane Assink (Yaroomba, QLD), Keitaro Fujinuma (Japan) and Byron Bay protégée, Kyuss King.

Conditions are forecast to improve for tomorrow’s final day of competition with a reduction in wind and slight increase in swell predicted.

The Wahu Surfer Groms Comp series offers a unique format that sees no elimination in round one. Instead, an accumulation of points from two rounds will decide progression into the finals and all surfers from today's round one will appear in round two tomorrow before the event progresses into the finals.

There was plenty of action out of the water today with Wahu prizes up for grabs during various beach game and plenty more to come during tomorrow’s final day of competition.

Contest organisers have pegged Burleigh as a likely location again tomorrow, however, competitors and spectators are encouraged to call the Surfing Queensland Event Hotline on Ph# (07) 3030 6388 after 6:30am each morning of competition for event location and start time.

The Wahu Surfer Groms Comps is proudly supported by Wahu, Surfing Australia and Surfing Queensland.
