Sally takes victory on the JW Medium fin template

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 29 May, 2014 - In some of the most challenging conditions ever seen for a women’s ASP Tour event, Aussie golden gal Sally Fitzgibbons has emerged victorious over Steph Gilmore while riding the new FCS II system and the JW Medium fin template.

Over the course of the event competitors were forced to adjust from the long open face walls of Cloudbreak to the funnelling barrels at Restaurants. Mixing backhand tube riding with powerful carves, Sal was unmatched by her competitors and adjusted seamlessly to each location by keeping her fin choice consistent and changing the size of her board to suit the waves.

The victory is Sal’s second in as many events and in contrast to the small shifting beach breaks of Rio, this latest win in Fiji was in big grinding reef waves. From the opening heat on the final day Sal looked comfortable in the solid conditions, and in her semi-final scored what is arguably the best backhand tube ride in the history of women’s competitive surfing.

“The waves have been incredible here in Fiji. The final day was challenging and I was so happy to find some great waves, that one barrel in particular felt amazing. My boards were also working great in the fast hollow conditions. The JW template allowed me to push hard off the bottom and turn quickly off the top”, said Sal.

Fiji Pro runner-up Stephanie Gilmore surfed valiantly through the event and was also riding the FCS II system. Steph’s fin of choice was the Carver Medium PC which is geared for open face carves and long down the line waves like Cloudbreak.

At last count 9 of the top 16 men, and 9 of the top 15 women were actively riding the new FCS II system. Since its inception into the market the FCS II system has won industry design awards, two ASP World Titles, and numerous WCT victories.
