Newcastle victorious at heated Hurley NSW Junior School Surfing Titles

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 July, 2012 : - - The prestigious Mr Shield was fought out amongst NSW top school surfers. The 6 foot sets couldn’t stop the state's best from the Far North Coast to the South Coast of NSW as they surfed a stacked day of talent packed heats. Far North Coast duo Tommy Boucaut and Mackie Walker (Byron Bay High), were knocked out in the semis, along with 2011 MR shield winner Matt King (Ulladulla High) who missed out by less than half a point with his team mate Chaz Rayner.

Teague Robinson and Brendan Hay (Central Coast) fought their way to the shield against Billy Drinkwater and James McMoreland (Newcastle). Robinson set a high standard with a 7.5 early leaving his competitors to catch up and team-mate Hay was not far off.

Hay and McMoreland demonstrated the top surfing the event is known for in junior surfing and a great exchange went down between the two in the dying minutes. McMorelands final wave saw a series of maneuvers that nailed an 8.5 (out of a possible 10), combined with team mate Drinkwaters tally the pair won the MR SHIELD taking it back to Newcastle – home of Mark Richards.

With Central Coast and South Coast out in the semis it was a Newcastle versus Sydney final in the under 19 girls. Grace Bambridge and Lisa Scott representing Sydney and Sarah Phelan and Ruby Bortolus surfed for Newcastle.

Matching the boys in victory, Newcastle team-mates Phelan and Bortulous proved too good for the Sydney surfers. All girls did extremely well in the solid sets that came through at park beach and Phelan excelled with a high 7.33 solidifying the win for Newcastle in the under 19 girls.

Under 16 boys was a highlight of the day and it seemed Chris Zaffis couldn’t go wrong. Surfing with Jeames Young for Far North Coast, the pair were unstoppable and won the MR SHIELD for Maclean High. Newcastle team mates Jackson Baker and Louis Stackhouse placed second behind the boys.

Young's early domination in the semis gave him Hurley wave of the day winning a new pair of board shorts for his stellar 8.5 ride. After waiting patiently for the right wave it paid off and a big round house cutback combined with a soiid bottom turn impressed the judges.

Tess Mawson chipped away on her back-hand dominating the final in the under 16 girls. Mawson nailed an impressive 7.00 and 8.83 to take the win with her team-mate Chae Maloney and the shield heads south to Ulladulla High for 2012. Contenders are welcomed by the Hoey Moey each night for great deals on meals and entertainment. The event is proudly supported by the Hoey Moey, VB, Coffs Harbour City Council, Coffs Harbour Tourism and Surfing NSW.
