West Australian surfers went all out to qualify for Australian Junior Surfing Titles

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 July, 2012 : - - Western Australia's next generation of surfing stars contested the third and final event of the 2012 Chill Junior Surfing Titles presented by SunSmart at  Flat Rocks, Geraldton at the weekend in clean conditions and solid 4-6ft (3m) swell.

Regarded as the single most important of the three events in the series, the final round went off with a bang as surfers from across the state made the most of the conditions with some extraordinary performances in a last-ditch bid to secure a Title and a coveted spot on the WA State Team.

With a total of fourteen positions for the WA Junior Surfing Team still in dispute coming into Geraldton, surfers went all out to qualify for Australian Junior Surfing Titles which will travel to Nubeena Beach in Tasmania in December. With quality conditions provided at the first two events in Margaret River and Trigg, Geraldton delivered yet again perfect conditions for the final event.

"Flat Rocks is a super reliable and consistent competition venue, it has rights and lefts and is a pretty open playing field for competitors.

"It is not the easiest place to surf, but every grom that pulled on a coloured rash vest impressed myself and the officials alike." Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks said.

The blue ribbon U18 Junior Boys is the most hotly contested division of the Chill Surfing Titles, with the past list of winners over the years including Taj Burrow, James Catto, Ry Craike, Luke Campbell and Jack Robinson, it offers a fairly accurate prediction into future surfing success. With Jacob Willcox (Margaret River) already capturing the State Title at the last event in Trigg, it was a matter of deciding the final team places to travel to Tasmania.

Amongst a group of South-West surfers who stood out in the preliminary rounds it was some Mid-West locals that shone. Gerladton local James Fleming used his local knowledge, great wave selection and impeccable surfing to send a clear message that this was to be his day.  It was Fleming's razor sharp forehand attack that was perfectly suited to the long walls on offer. With turns that continually sent huge fans of spray into the air Fleming was rewarded with an 8.00 and a 7.33, to finish with a combined total of 15.33 (from a possible 20).

Fellow finalists Shaun Manners, Josh Burke (Margaret River) and Jye Perkins (Kalbarri) had all earned their place into the final with great surfing and kept the pressure on Fleming with each securing solid scores. Despite Manner's challenging for the win with a heat high 8.67 (from a possible 10), it was Fleming who took the win and a position in the State Surfing Team.

“It was always going to be a close heat, but Im stoked to come out on top and qualify for Nationals... I'd like to thank everyone that came down to support me and my sponsors." Fleming said.

The U18 Junior Girlls final was another closely fought affair, with less than half a point separating Eliza Greene (Yallingup) and Emi Campbell (Denmark) when the siren sounded. In a tug of war style battle the two girls went head to head in the closest final of the weekend. Greene's sweeping roundhouse cutbacks were the difference giving her the win and the U18 Girls State Title, with Campbell in close second place. Carnarvon's Alex Durant finished in third place after receiving nine stitches to her mouth in an accident free surfing on Saturday. Hannah Massie (Margaret River) finished in fourth but did enough to qualify for National Titles.

"We've been up here for a few days and the waves have been great. Im stoked to be heading to another National Titles." Said Greene who will lead a strong group of young female surfers to Nubeena Beach to represent their state in December.

The U16 Cadet Boys was a pleasure to watch with some smooth and progressive surfing being offered by all four finalists. Shaun Manners (Margaret River) was in blistering form all weekend and although the 16's State Title had already been secured by close friend Jacob Willcox, the talented natural footer shone in his absence. Manners kept the momentum rolling from his U18 final and found the best waves of the heat to seamlessly link smooth and committed turns.

Chasing a solid result in Geraldton, the win for Manners moved him into second place on the ratings behind Willcox and into his the WA State Team. Fletcher Cremasco (Kalbarri) surfed well in the large surf to finish in second place ahead of Duke Nagtzaam (Yallingup), and Jack Challis (Margaret River) who finished in third and fourth place respectively.

Manners who posted the biggest scores of the weekend was elated with his efforts and his first time in the WA State Team. "I'm really looking forward to heading away with a solid WA Team. ... It's my first time in a State Team and I'm going to make the most of it. Thanks to my Mum and Dad and everyone that has made it a great weekend." Manners Said.

In other results from the weekend Emi Campbell (Denmark) won the U16 Cadet Girls division ahead of Bailee Hastie (Margaret River). The two will now represent WA after defeating Eliza Greene and Luciana Burke (Margaret River) who finished third and fourth respectively.

Duke Nagtzaam (Yallingup) defeated a class filed in the U14 Grommet Boys. Nagtzaam was too strong for Felix Leaver (Yallingup) in second, with Charlie Wise (Yallingup) third and Ben Edwards (Cottesloe) in fourth.

Phoebe McGregor (Yallingup) won the U14 Grommet Girls division, while Ben Gradisen (Margaret River) claimed his maiden U12 Micro Groms State Title with a close fought win over Max Leaver (Yallingup).

Whilst qualification to the Australian Junior Surfing Titles remains the key objective for many competitors, the 2012 Chill WA Junior Surfing Titles has seen an impressive list of State Champions crowned across seven divisions as well as discover a new and super talented group of emerging surfers within the state. The WA Junior Surfing Team now boasts a team that has representatives from the Central-West, Perth-Metro, South-West and South Coast which shows the strength of the sport right across WA.

The attention of the successful surfers will now shift to the upcoming training camps, and high performance sessions scheduled to best prepare the team for the pressures of a National Title campaign.
