Santiago Muniz Wins the ASP 3-Star Rip Curl Pro Piedras Negras in Peru |Portugues

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 June, 2013 : - - Waves in the 3-4 foot range were on hand for the final day of the ASP 3-Star Rip Curl Pro Piedras Negras in Ilo, Moquegua, Peru. Santiago Muniz (ARG), 20, came out victorious in the Final over David do Carmo (BRA), 29, at the left hand point break and earned U$ 8,000 and 750 points towards his ASP World Ranking.
“I’m so emotional for winning my first ASP event”, said Santiago Muniz, who is also the younger brother of WCT surfer, Alejo Muniz (BRA). “It feels great to win in such an incredible place, with such nice people and with perfect waves all week long here at Piedras Negras. Everybody surfed at such a high level and pushed each other throughout the competition. Next up is Arica and I’m looking forward to doing well there too.”
Despite his 2nd place finish, David do Carmo was the standout surfer of the event and posted 10-point rides on his way to the Finals in last day. In the Quarterfinals, David do Carmo defeated Marco Giorgi (URY), 25, by a score of 16.67 to 15.33 and followed that in the Semifinals by beating Thiago Guimaraes (BRA), 20, 16.27 to 12.60 respectively.
In spite of the long left-handers breaking along Piedras Negras, wave selection was pivotal as the tide became an influence during the Final as sets took longer to come in. “Yeah, conditions for the Finals were a little irregular because of the wind that picked up and big turns were getting higher scores than tube rides,” said David do Carmo.

“When I saw that Santiago (Muniz) was getting bigger scores, I decided to wait for a good wave to get the score I needed, but it never came. I congratulate Santiago for the win and we’re both stoked for our results in this event. I also want to thank my sponsor, OZ Surfing, my coach Nelson Junior and everybody back home at Praia Grande.”
The next event in the ASP South America Surf Series will be the ASP 3-Star Monster Energy presents Maui and Sons Arica Pro by Sony from June 10-15 at the heavy reef break of El Gringo, in Arica, Chile.
