Over-45s, Over-50s, Over-55s and Over-60s men revel in four-foot surf

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 June, 2013 : - - The first day of the Australian Skin Cancer Clinics NSW Longboard Titles kicked off today in Bonny Hills.
Competitors in the Over-45s, Over-50s, Over-55s and Over-60s men attacked the long, tapered four-foot walls. Six-times Australian champion, Richard Smith made his mark on the event early, locking in a 7.5 and a 6.00 ride. As a result Richard won his heat and booked his spot in the Over-35 Men semi-finals.

Richard said: “It was really nice out there today. There were some long and solid waves coming through that allowed for a fair few moves. In the decade I’ve been coming to the event, this is the best I’ve seen Bonny Hills.” The Sawtell surfer added: “I guess my goal is just to have fun in the event. Every year I come here, a few of the guys and I get a house at Lake Cathie."

Joining Richard in the Over-45 winners circle was Hayden Swan who locked in a heat total of 13.17. Progressing through the Over-50s heats was Gary Burden, Ross Murphy and Richard Smith. Local surfer Renne Kocis finished in second place in his Over-50s Mens and as a result progressed straight through to the semi-finals with the aforementioned winners.

Peter Becker, Ric Chalmers and John Murray all locked in solid wins in the Over-55 Mens to move into Thursday’s semi-finals. All third and fourth place finishers were relegated to the requalification rounds which will be surfed tomorrow.

The Carve of the Day award was given to Murwillumbah surfer Peter Becker. Peter managed to snag a 7.17 for a long lefthander, which allowed multiple flowing carves and turns. For his efforts Peter scored himself a pair of Carve sunglasses.

In addition to the event, Surfing NSW also conducted its free CPR and Board Rescue Course, Surfers Rescue 24/7 at Bonny Hills Surf Life Saving Club. The three-hour course armed 15 participants with a variety of skill-sets that may prove to be crucial in times of need.

“We feel implementing Surfers Rescue 24/7 into the event provides the perfect opportunity for the longboard competitors to learn a range of skills that could come in handy throughout their surfing life,” said Surfing NSW Event Manager Luke Madden. “All competitors who partook in the course were overwhelmingly positive of the course and the skills they learnt.”

Tomorrow’s event will kick off with the Over-45 Men requalification round one. An updated heat draw and running schedule will be available from June 18 at 7.00pm at surfingnsw.com.au Due to the eclectic variety of waves in the Port Macquarie area, the event will be fully mobile and can be held at either: Town Beach, Rainbow Beach, Grants Beach, Flynns Beach, Lighthouse Beach or North Haven.

All competitors are advised to ring the event hotline (0458 247 212) by 6.45am on the days of competition to confirm location and running order.
Event sponsor Australian Skin Cancer Clinics will be giving all competitors, family, staff and spectators a free bulk-billed Skin Cancer check at their Port Macquarie office. Visit Australian Skin Cancer Clinics for more info.
