Padang Padang Awakens, But Rip Curl Cup Invitational Holds Out For The Perfect Swell

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 30 July, 2013 : - - Padang Padang, Bali - A solid dose of Indian Ocean swell saw the mythical wave at Padang Padang come alive on Monday morning, and while some fun freesurf barrels were on offer, the invited surfers and contest directors agreed that conditions were neither big enough nor consistent enough to hold the 10-Year Anniversary of the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang Invitational on this swell.

“This was the biggest swell to hit Bali during the event waiting period so far,” said Rip Curl's James Hendy. “Because of a variety of factors we were skeptical that this swell would provide enough size over a full day of competition, and that's exactly how it played out today, with the swell peaking overnight and dropping quickly throughout the day. It's going to take a truly epic swell for us to give the green light to run the 10-year anniversary of the Rip Curl Cup. Hopefully we get it this year.”

The large crowd gathered on the beach at Padang Padang hoping to score a live viewing of the 2013 Rip Curl Cup was instead treated to some freesurfing fireworks in the grinding 3-4 foot barrels rolling in at the world-famous lefthander. The morning freesurf included performances by several of the competitors in this year's contest, including: Garut Widiarta (Bali), Pepen Hendrik (Bali), Mustofa Jeksen (Bali), and first-time invitee Usman Trioko (Lombok).

Two weeks now remain in the official Rip Curl Cup event waiting period, which runs from July 1st to August 15th. The full roster of surfers – 16 of Indonesia's greatest and 16 of the world's top tube riders – are now in Bali ready to put on the best barrel-riding show of the season at Padang Padang when the contest gets the green light.
