Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 August, 2013 : - - The experience of Dan Redman of Durban North and Tasha Mentasti of Sea Point saw them take honours in the inaugural Scottburgh Powerplay Surf Pro which was concluded in challenging surf and strong onshore winds at Main Beach in Scottburgh Sunday ( August 4th).

Redman scored 14,00 points out of a possible 20 to pocket the R10,000 winners cheque while Beyrick de Vries of Umhlanga, who arrived back home last Thursday after reaching the top 48 in the US Open of Surfing at Huntington Beach, posted 13,00 points and had to settle for second place. Current South African champion and Scottburgh local Casey Grant posted 8,5 to secure third and Klee Skei Strachan of Kingsburgh scored 7,25 and came fourth.

Frankie Oberholzer of Warner Beach and Gavin Roberts of Scottburgh came joint fifth with Chad du Toit of Durban and Matt Kruger of Umdloti ending seventh. Redman was stoked with his victory. “I wasn’t expecting a win at all so I am very excited to have made it to the final and then to take the win. Scottburgh is an amazing place to surf and it has awesome waves, so I am really stoked” said the 2013 champion.

Mentasti of Sea Point in Cape Town, the current South African Masters Champion, scored 11,10 points in the final and deserved he first place and the R4000 winners cheque. 2013 SA Junior Team member Nicole Pallet of La Lucia fought hard for her 9,25 points and second place while Tammy Lee Smith of Chakas Rock scored 5,50 to finish third ahead of plucky 15 year old Teal Hogg of Umhlanga Rocks, who posted 15,05 for fourth place.

Heidi Palmboom of the Bluff and Chanelle Botha of Warner Beach were joint fifth with SA Under 20 Champion Emma Smith of Jeffrey’s Bay and Courtenay Ellish of Warner Beach ending joint seventh.

Mentasti was full of praise for the local area. “I am very proud to have won this event, especially as I am the second oldest woman in the competition. I have in fact coached some of the younger girls (who I competed against). Scottburgh is a lovely surf spot and an awesome town and it is nice to be on the South Coast and back in the warm water again.” said the elated winner.

The Scottburgh Powerplay Surf Pro was a 3A Rated Men’s and 2A Rated Women’s event on the Surfing South Africa Pro Surf Tour Rated Women’s and formed part of the Africa Marine and Leisure Expo presented by UGU South Coast Tourism.
