Town of Gladstone launches plan for wave pool park

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 27 August, 2013 : - - Almost 500km from the nearest surf beach, the Queensland central coast town of Gladstone could soon be home to the endless summer, with a man-made tourist attraction promising the perfect wave 365 days a year. It would be a world away from the current situation in Gladstone, where the biggest waves are ripples generated by cargo ships leaving the murky waters of the industrial harbour.

Developer Mark Wilkes has already earmarked a 141ha site just south of Gladstone for the Discovery Coast lifestyle park and surf retreat, a tourism development to feature mountain bike circuits, wakeboarding and Australia's first genuine surfing wave pool capable of delivering 2m peeling barrels. The $75 million project is likely to go before the Gladstone Regional Council early next year.

If approved, it would become the first surfing wave pool in Australia, beating plans to establish similar projects on the Gold Coast and at Ipswich. Some theme parks already have wave pools but none are suitable for serious surfing. Mr Wilkes, the CEO of River Island Property Development, was confident of the project's success, despite its location hundreds of kilometres away from other surfing beaches.

"You see people travel all the way to Bali or Fiji for surfing holidays, so why not Gladstone?" he said.
"If people are going on a surfing trip, we think there is a pretty strong lure in a place that has perfect 2m waves guaranteed day or night."
